National dementia and antipsychotic prescribing audit

July 28 2012

The National dementia and antipsychotic prescribing audit aims to gather information from primary care to establish a national picture of prescribing antipsychotic medication in people with dementia.

Findings include:

  • a 52% decrease in the rate of prescribing between 2008 and 2011.
  • a decrease in prescriptions for antipsychotics in people newly diagnosed with dementia have also reduced from 14.25% in 2006 to 4.46% in 2011, which indicates that diagnosis is taking place much earlier.
