Eye Tests at Home
April 4 2019Eye care is important for people with dementia and may be provided at home or in a care home. Eye examinations are free for over 60’s and for some younger people with dementia, as are home visits if it is difficult to get to a practice. Benefits may be available to help towards the cost of glasses.
You may be able to get an eye test at home for someone who is unable to visit a community opticians unaccompanied. A mobile sight test, when an optometrist comes to visit you can be:
- at home – if you’re unable to leave home unaccompanied because of physical or mental illness or disability
- at a residential or care home – if you’re a resident and unable to leave the home unaccompanied because of physical or mental illness or disability
- at a day centre – if you can’t get a sight test at an optician’s practice because of physical or mental illness or disability, or difficulties communicating your health needs unaided
