The report highlights examples from communities in Australia, Japan, Germany, Scotland, Tasmania and the United States where dementia-friendly communities are supporting people with dementia.

The report recognises that dementia-friendly communities:

  • are are a response to pervasive and destructive stigma around dementia and people living with dementia in many parts of the world.
  • give full voice to people living with dementia in their design and execution, understanding that at times we have a great challenge to listen to the voices of people living with dementia, especially those who have lost the ability to raise their own concerns. Our growing knowledge of Alzheimer’s and other dementias as lifespan diseases makes this even more complicated.
  • complement the World Health Organization’s promotion and designation of Age Friendly Cities (now expanded to communities)
are being created in the UK supported by clear standards, using techniques that are common in community
  • development.
