A proposal for a UK dementia eye care pathway

June 11 2015

This article published in the journal Optometry in Practice introduces a proposal for a UK dementia eye care pathway and outlines the areas that should be covered within a pathway.

By formally acknowledging the individual’s right to information and appropriate eye care services, it is envisaged that the pathway could reduce the prevalence of visual impairment in people with dementia and the considerable impact of visual impairment on an individual’s quality of life.

The proposal is a key output of the  Prevalence of Visual Impairment in Dementia study (PrOVIDe) that sought to identify the prevalence of a range of vision problems in people with dementia aged 60-89 years and the extent to which these conditions are undetected or inappropriately managed.
